Corvette ZR-1 Nordschleife Video

A few posts back, I mentioned the Old Nurburgring: 14 miles and (back in the day) 10 minutes to the lap.  It's one thing to talk about it and look at a track map.  It's another to see it driven.  Below the map is a video of a Corvette C-6 ZR-1 doing it at a speed Fangio would have found mind-boggling.

The modern, "You can drive it for a few Euros," iteration of the old course does not include the South Curve, which is part of the new Grand Prix course.  In the video,  Mero enters and finishes at the road network before Hatzenbach.

This video has been making the rounds for a while.  To view it, scroll down the front page to the "play" icon.  It runs about 8 minutes.  The ZR-1 is stock.  The driver is Jim Mero, a Corvette engineer.

That was some scary 'get your a** killed' speed right there. Loved watching it, but know deep in my heart that the pucker factor would have been high if I was riding shotgun with Jim.

Me too. I suppose he's driven it many times, and probably knows what he can get away with where. About the 5th-6th time I watched it, I noticed that he got 2 wheels off, driver's right, about 3/4 of the way around. WAY off-like the center-line of the car. You can hear the rumble strips. Don't suppose he'd have gone in too hot like that in some other spots.

Amazing to me how a road car with treaded summer tires sticks, even if it IS a ZL-1.
